Russian toddler names car brands - video screencap

This Russian two year old is sharp as a tack when it comes to knowing her car brands. Over the course of this video, she names nearly every brand she passes; impressive when there are plenty of adults who don't know an Audi from a Nissan. Another thing that's clear from the video, Mazda, BMW (all in a row!) и Hyundai are pretty popular brands in this little automotive whiz-kid's neighborhood.

Check out the video по-долу for nearly three and a half minutes of full-on "awwwwww" - it's a welcome dose of cute from the land whose car culture is too often associated with wacky and/or ghastly dashcam videos.

Съобщи: Dodge to resurrect Scat Pack?

Dodge Scat Pack logo

Before social media ever existed, if automotive enthusiasts wanted to be noticed or recognize other fans, they joined a car club. За Dodge muscle car lovers from 1968 through 1971, that group was known as the Scat Pack. Just like the Charger, Challenger и Dart nameplates, it looks like the Scat Pack could be getting a resurrection by Chrysler.

Automotive News is reporting that Chrysler recently renewed its trademark on the Scat Pack name, and while this is in no way a guarantee that the name will return, AN talked to Tim Kuniskis, Dodge President and CEO, who stoked the fire a little more. In the article, Kuniskis said that the name is "a very important part of our history" and added that "we like the whole idea of having a Scat Pack of cars." Scat Pack models were identified by their bumblebee stripes and helmet-wearing bumblebee logo, and the idea of a modern Scat Pack doesn't seem all that outlandish in light of recent vehicles like the Charger SRT Super Bee and the Ram 1500 Rumble Bee Concept.

What do you think, is this a cool idea, or is it just an unwelcome bit of nostalgia? Have your say in Comments.

Building Cars Out of Batteries Isn’t as Crazy as It Sounds

The high cost and limited range of electric vehicles can make them a tough sell, and their costliest and most limiting component are their batteries.

But batteries also open up new design possibilities because they can be shaped in more ways than gasoline tanks and because they can be made of load-bearing materials. If their chemistries can be made safer, batteries could replace conventional door panels and other body parts, potentially making a vehicle significantly lighter, more spacious and cheaper. This could go some way toward helping electric cars compete with gas-powered ones.

Tesla Motors and Volvo have demonstrated early versions of the general approach by building battery packs that can replace some of the structural material in a conventional car. Dozens of other research groups and companies are taking further steps to make batteries that replace existing body parts, such as body panels and frames. Read more...

Audi hits up Inrix to add parking spot finder to Audi Connect dash systems

Audi hits up Inrix to add parking spot finder to Audi Connect dash systems

While there are smartphones apps that take some of the hassle out of finding parking, Audi's bringing similar time- and frustration-saving features to a different screen in your ride, through its Audi Connect infotainment systems. Announced at the Telematics Detroit conference, Audi is tapping Inrix's parking spot data so you can find car-friendly floor space from within its dashboard navigation platform. After telling the car where you want to go, you'll have the option to see parking info at the journey's end, including the nearest locations, operating hours, prices and real-time space availability, depending on what data is available from each garage. The sat-nav will also direct you straight to the entrance of the lot, and should you want to know what that entrance looks like, Google Street View will show you. Audi's new parking feature should start hitting Connect-equipped cars from today via an OTA update, so the "finding a space was a nightmare" excuse won't fly next time you're late. But don't worry, we won't tell anyone.

Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid plug-in model brings 416 guilt-free horsepower

0
0

Daily commute got you down? You'll soon be able to do it in a Porsche by the end of the year without burning a drop of gas, thanks to a new plug-in Panamera S E-Hybrid model. The powertrain, which we saw earlier on a concept car, combines a V6 bi-turbo gas engine with a 95 horsepower electric model for 416 total system horsepower. Like recent offerings from Ford and others, на 2014 model adds a much larger 9.4 kWh battery to last year's non-plug-in hybrid, letting you trundle on electrons alone at up to 80MPH for 20 miles or so with with nary a puff of CO2. All that eco-friendly driving will be undone when you decide to open 'er up in combined gas / electric mode, обаче, as the zippy four-door will hit 0-60MPH in about 5.5 seconds with a decidedly un-green top speed of 165MPH. Still, the company says overall fuel consumption's been reduced over the last model and you'll get other niceties like Porsche's Car Connect smartphone app to view and control different vehicle functions. While Prius drivers won't be able to look down their noses at the model anymore, government incentives will make a much smaller dent in its estimated $99,000 price tag.Filed under: TransportationComments

Honda’s Latest Minivan Comes with Its Own Vacuum

honda odyssey minivan vacuum auto showHonda Motor Co./AP Honda latest iteration of its Honda Odyssey, unveiled Wednesday at the New York auto show, includes a built-in vacuum cleaner on some models. By DEE-ANN DURBIN

DETROIT -- Stray Cheerios beware. The new Honda Odyssey minivan is here -- and it has a built-in vacuum cleaner.

Honda Motor Co. (HMC) showed off its updated Odyssey minivan Tuesday evening ahead of the New York International Auto Show. The 2014 Odyssey -- last redesigned in 2011 -- has a richer, more chiseled look, chrome-trimmed fog lights and other premium features.

But HondaVAC, the hand-held vacuum integrated into the cargo area, will likely be its most talked-about feature. Honda says it's the first to offer this family-friendly tool, which it developed with heavy-duty vacuum maker Shop-Vac. Honda's system includes nozzle accessories and a hose that can reach every corner of the vehicle. It doesn't need an outlet for recharging, and can work continuously when the motor is running -- or for up to eight minutes when the van is turned off.

Honda says the vacuum will be standard on the most expensive version of the Odyssey, and it will announce availability on other versions later.

Tami Giammarco, lead engineer on the van's interior, said the vacuum idea came from the daughter of an engineer who saw how frustrated her father was when kids made a mess in his van. "'Dad, you need a vacuum in here,'" she told her father, Giammarco said.

Minivan sales could use a jolt. They peaked at 1.4 млн. 2000, but have fallen rapidly since as buyers shifted to popular crossover wagons like the Honda CR-V and Toyota Motor Corp.'s (TM) RAV4. U.S. minivan sales totaled 540,188 last year.

Still, sales outpaced the industry average last year, and should grow even more this year when Ford Motor Co. (F) rolls out its first minivan since 2006, the Transit Connect Wagon. And if Generation Y buyers in their late 20s and early 30s choose a minivan as they start families, business could boom.

Honda is eager to be part of the action. So far this year, the Odyssey is the third-best selling minivan in the U.S., behind the Toyota Sienna and the Dodge Caravan. Excluding sales to fleet buyers such as rental car companies, Honda is No. 1, said Mike Acavitti, senior vice president of marketing for American Honda.

Acavitti said the minivan segment should keep growing because of its utility, and he expects Honda's share of the market rise with the revamped Odyssey.

"There is no more flexible vehicle," he said.

Here are more details about 2014 Odyssey:

Извън: Honda sharpened the Odyssey's looks with a more sculpted hood, two-tone mirror housings and other details. It also improved the structure so that the van can get top marks in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's new frontal crash test, which hits a fixed barrier at an angle. The Odyssey also has some new optional safety equipment, including forward collision and lane departure warning systems.

Inside: There are new materials and a new control center in the dashboard. Optional new features include keyless entry and pushbutton start and HondaLink, which connects to the driver's smartphone and plays music or reads updates from Twitter and Facebook.

Under the Hood: The 2014 Odyssey will offer the same engine as the current model: a 3.5-liter V-6 that produces 248 horsepower and gets 22 miles per gallon in combined city and highway driving. It has a six-speed automatic transmission.

Price: Not released. The 2013 Odyssey starts at $28,675.

Cheers: A Honda Odyssey with a vacuum cleaner? What's not to love?

Jeers: Strategic Vision, a consulting group, казва 3 percent of U.S. buyers are considering minivans these days, down from 6 percent a decade ago. There are many other family-friendly, fun-to-drive vehicles, like the Mazda CX-5 or Honda's own CR-V, that get better fuel economy.

Telenav announces Scout for Cars Built In, brings together phones and indash systems in navigation harmony

Telenav has long been a purveyor of navigation apps for телефони, browsers, и cars, but today the company's revealed Scout for Cars: Built In to bring those platforms together. It's an in-dash system that provides both the form factor and UX optimized for autos and all the features of the Scout for Phones app. It works using Bluetooth to connect to iOS, Android, or Windows Phone devices to sync your info and let you access the mobile app's current map info. It also borrows your phone's data connection, which gives users access to voice control and search and discovery features, plus real-time weather and traffic updates using the in-dash touchscreen.

Scout for Cars: Built In can also seamlessly hand off navigation duties to the phone when you exit your car -- a convenient feature for folks as directionally challenged on foot as they are behind the wheel. И, if you're worried about getting lost should you forget to bring your phone, fear not, for Scout for Cars: Built In uses your handset to provide a better experience, but it's not dependent upon it, so it still gets you where you need to go on its own. The system is currently available to automakers right now, so the system should be finding its way into dealerships sometime soon.
